Wix vs Custom Website: Which Is Better for a Small Business?
Neither Wix nor custom development is inherently better for every business. The decision depends on requirements, functionality, desired control, editing needs, management preferences, integrations and expected growth. Compare the specific implementation you need—not the status of a platform name.

When Wix makes sense
Wix combines visual editing, managed hosting and common business tools. Its documentation describes automatic hosting setup and platform updates. That reduces infrastructure setup and can suit straightforward websites and owners who want direct control of their content and layout.
There is nothing inherently unprofessional about using Wix. A clear, well-maintained site that supports customers can be a sensible business choice. Wix also offers developer tools for custom functionality and integrations; the platform is not limited to untouched templates.

Wix tradeoffs: templates and portability
Wix’s template guidance says an existing site cannot simply switch to another template. It describes creating a new site, reusing supported elements, pages and media, and transferring the plan and domain. Editing the current design is a different decision from starting with another template.
Wix also explains that its site implementation depends on Wix’s infrastructure and cannot be hosted with another provider as the same working site. The content belongs to you, but leaving the platform generally requires planning a new implementation and migrating what can be transferred—not merely moving the hosting account.
These tradeoffs matter when external hosting control or a major structural change is a real requirement. They do not, by themselves, make an existing Wix site unsuitable. Assess its current editor, features and migration work before deciding.

Where custom development may provide more control
A custom implementation may give the development team more direct control over the user interface, responsive behavior, application logic, integrations, databases, authentication and workflows. That can help when a customer journey or business rule does not fit the available platform tools well.
Deployment choices also depend on the stack. Next.js documents Node.js, Docker, static-export and adapter deployment options; static export has limited feature support. This illustrates flexibility, not a promise that every custom site can move without changes or that Next.js alone produces a good website.
Custom control brings responsibility for security, maintenance, hosting and future changes. Specify editing access, ownership and handover expectations rather than assuming a visual editor or managed service is automatically included.

Custom does not automatically mean faster—or better for search
A poorly engineered custom website can perform worse than a properly implemented Wix website. Measure loading, responsiveness and layout stability using Core Web Vitals, then inspect the assets, scripts and rendering responsible for the result.
Custom development can provide opportunities for performance work; those opportunities still require competent implementation and testing. The platform label alone does not demonstrate speed, usability or search quality, and custom development does not automatically rank better on Google.

Website management changes the decision
Some owners want to manage layout, updates, apps or plugins, SEO settings, content and integrations themselves. Others would rather run the business and have a developer responsible for the technical website system. Neither preference is wrong, but each creates different time and support needs.
An owner-managed Wix site can reduce infrastructure tasks, while content and configuration still need attention. Developer management can also be appropriate on an existing platform. A custom site needs an explicit plan for deployment, dependencies, technical issues and content updates.

Wix may be the better fit when…
Its available tools cover the requirements, you value visual editing and managed infrastructure, and someone has time to keep the content and configuration current. Keeping a platform that already works may be more reasonable than paying for a migration.
Custom development may be the better fit when…
Specific workflows, integrations, interface behavior or deployment requirements are better served by a tailored implementation, and the business has a realistic development and maintenance plan. A custom build should answer an identified need rather than add complexity for hypothetical growth.
